While one of the most accomplished drivers in history, Mario Andretti sought to add a victory in the 24 hours of Le Mans throughout his career, driving in the race nine times from 1966-2000. In 1983 he teamed up with his son Michael and Philippe Alliot, driving for the Porsche Kremer Racing team. However, the Rothmans Porsche team was going for thier third straight Le Mans win, and following up on 1982's 1-2-3 finish (which was also the car number finishing order), the Rothmans Porsche team was again the team to beat, and they lived up to expectations finishing 1st and 2nd, with the Andretti Alliot car coming in 3rd, six laps down. It would be Andretti's best Le Mans finish until 1995 when he finished 2nd overeall and first in class.
