F1 Rain Tires

So many classic Formula One races were contended in wet conditions, but for the F1 modeler, replicating some of the cars that contested these races has been problematic due to lack of available rain tires. So it is with great joy that I let you know that there is a great source for 1/20 scale F1 rain tires (or tyres for my European friends). His name is Derek Collins and he runs Icon Automotive Miniatures.

Derek was kind enough to send me a couple sets of his black-resin tires to evaluate and I must say, these are NICE! The black resin has a natural rubber look to it – you can have an excellent finished product with nothing more than a light sanding of the tread. Derek does recommend painting the tires (he recommends Tamiya TS 82 black rubber), but in my opinion painting is optional. The rear wheels from your kit fit without modification. The front wheels will have to have some material removed so that they will fit the solid resin front tires. Each set of tires comes with tire marking decals (where applicable) and several pages of instructions and reference photos.

The area where the sprue attaches to the tire is a bit thick and requires a razor saw to detach the tire which leaves a flat spot on the tire. I do not consider this a problem – I consider this as a fairly accurate representation of the tires’ contact patch and will help the car sit nice and still.

There is a wide variety of styles available to replicate most cars from the mid 1970s through the early 1980s. Derek even makes rain tires for the Tyrell P34 six-wheeler. This is ideal since Tamiya issued a 1976 Japanese Grand Prix version of this kit, but doesn’t come with rain tires even though the race was contested in the rain.

Here is what is available:
