Driver turned car owner Eddie Cheever came to Indy in 1998 without a primary sponsor. Just two weeks before the race Rachel’s Potato Chips signed on to sponsor the team and what a deal they got as Eddie drove a determined race to hold off Buddy Lazier to earn an immensly popular Indy 500 Victory. But as the race started, it looked like disaster as Eddie was actually bumped from behind on an opening lap incident. He maintainted control and kept going. In the closing laps Eddie drove like a man posessed as he nearly brushed the wall coming out of the turns lap after lap. In his post race interview Eddie stated “I wasn’t going to finish second. Second was not in the books today. I was either going to win, or not finish at all.”
