Nicknamed the Flying Dutchman, Arie Luyendyk drove the fastest 500 miles that Indianapolis has ever seen, averaging a record 185.981 mph and taking just over 2 hours and 40 minutes. Arie holds every major speed record at Indy minus one (fastest race lap belongs to Eddie Cheever). In addition to the record for 500 miles, he holds the record for fastest single qualifying lap, fastest four lap qualifying run, fastest single non-turbocharged qualifying lap, fastest 4 lap non-turbocharged qualifying run, and fastest unofficial lap (239 mph!). In addition Arie has a rare distinction of having started 1st, 2nd and 3rd, having finished 1st, 2nd and 3rd, being Rookie of the Year, won the pole position more than once, and the race more than once. Arie’s accomplishments at Indy put him near the top of all-time Indy greats.
