In 1980 was the year of the Yellow Submarine. Johnny Rutherford dominated the month of May, cruising to the pole position, then following up that performance with an easy cruise to victory to gain his third Indianapolis 500. The elated Rutherford was kind enough to stop at the pit entrance on his victory lap to give a ride to Rookie of the Year Tim Richmond whose car had come to a stop on the last lap. Richmond would move on to NASCAR where he had considerable success before passing away in 1989.
