In 1976 the 500 was wet again for the third time in 4 years. Johnny Rutherford started on the pole and was leading at the halfway point when it started raining. The race was red flagged at 102 laps - one lap beyond the minimum for a complete race. The rains stopped and track drying was almost complete and ready for a restart when the rain came again putting an end to the day - and the race.
