In 1971 Al Unser accomplished an incredible feat, becoming a back-to-back winner of the Indy 500 - something only accomplished three times prior - and something that has not yet happened since. This race was marked by one of the more bizarre situations in Indy competition when the pace car crashed into a photographers stand at the start of the race injuring several but fortunately killing nobody. In addition to pace car driver Eldon Palmer, passengers in the car included speedway owner Tony Hulman and astronaut John Glenn. You will not find reference to the accident in any offical Speedway videos or books.
