Sadly this race was marred by tragedy as popular Eddie Sachs and rookie Dave MacDonald were killed in a horribly fiery accident as they were completing the second lap. The race was stopped for an hour-and-a-half to clean up the wreckage and veteran announcer Sid Colins delivered a moving eulogy to Eddie live during the radio broadcast.
