From lap 7, the race was a battle between Bill Vukovich and Troy Ruttman as they swapped the lead 7 times over the course of the race. But in the last quarter of the race Vuky appeared to have a handle on victory, but it was not to be as his steering broke on lap 192 taking him out of the race. Vuky would go on to win in 53 and 54, but 1952 belonged to Ruttman, who at 22 years of age became the youngest winner in Indianapolis 500 history.
