For the third year in a row, a rookie won the Indianapolis 500... sort of. Although it was his first time as an entrant in the Indianapolis 500, Louis Meyer is not offically listed as a rookie winner due to the fact that he had driven relief in the race prior to 1928. Just 23 years old at the time, Meyer was the youngest winner of the 500 and remained so until Troy Ruttman won the race in 1952 at age 22. Louis went on to win two more 500’s becoming the first person to win three. He is also the first driver to drink milk in victory lane (1933), starting a tradition that exists until this day.

At age 89 Louis came out of retirement to drive in an electric car race... and won!
