Once again it looked like 1915 winner Ralph DePalma was going to win again, but just like in 1912, with a comanding lead, mechanical problems cost DePalma victory as his car caught fire on the 187th lap. His riding mechanic and nephew Pete DePaolo (1925 winner) managed to put out the fire without the car ever coming to a stop. However a faulty magneto had limited them to running on only 4 of their cars 8 cylinders as Gaston Chevrolet roared by to victory.
In November of 1920, Gaston was killed in this car, triggering the long standing superstition against green race cars.
