Nigem Mansell dominated the 1992 Formula One World Championship, winning the first 5 races of the season and cruising to an easy championship. Known as Il Leone (the Lion) or simply Red Five, Mansells championship was hugely popular and well deserved after more than a decade in Formula One. Mansell left the Williams team at the end of 1992 and moved over to the CART circuit where, as a rookie, he once again dominated the season and won the championship and even scored his first oval victories including the Michigan 500 on the high banked Michigan Speedway.
